DATA EXCHANGE AND CAX-INTEGRATION
IN DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

Today’s design and development process is characterized by complex integration of different disciplines. This multidisciplinary design requires simultaneous engineering of different physical and mechanical problems on one single engineering item. Embedded in an overall design process starting with conceptual design and ending with a drawing set and manufacturing data, optimization of the ‘item’ is performed with help of different software tools.
This procedure requires intense data exchange during all the engineering iterations. Often it is necessary to exchange data automatically during closed loop analyses when two physical problems interact with each other. This is the case e.g. when aerodynamics interact with structural behavior as it is the case in aerokinetic heating analyses and aeroelasticity analyses.
On basis of different examples data exchange is illustrated between CAD-system and an engineering tool e.g. finite-element-code on one hand and on the other hand coupling of engineering tools e.g. finite-element-code and finite-volume-code.
Experiences are presented how data exchange can be managed between and by using state-of-the-art tools without establishing or using special developed interfaces and translators. Therefore an impression of the complex data flow in a specific design environment will be presented first. Reasons will be listed why CAx-integration is of increasing importance. On hand of selected problems guidelines will be shown how to cure and how to overcome geometry transfer problems. Procedures for running coupled analyses joining together different analysis tools will be given.
As a conclusion a requirement list will be established how future tool standards should look like in order to facilitate data exchange and tool integration.
